TDCJ Is a State System
The Texas Department of Criminal Justice is a statewide corrections system, not a Throckmorton County jail. No TDCJ unit was found within the county. Its relevance begins when a local or host jail delivers a person into state custody to serve a prison sentence. A county-jail release record should name TDCJ as the receiving authority, and the state record should later establish the TDCJ number, location, sentence information, and state-custody status.
This distinction prevents two common errors. A Stephens County Jail status of RELEASED may mean transfer into TDCJ rather than return to the community. Conversely, disappearance from the TDCJ online search may mean the person is no longer currently incarcerated there, but it does not establish the date, type, or finality of release. The local transport record and TDCJ history document separate links in the chain.
Throckmorton Transfers Can Reach TDCJ
A May 2023 official Throckmorton sheriff report recorded two inmates transported to TDCJ in Abilene. That local record demonstrates why a person can vanish from the regional jail roster while remaining incarcerated. It does not identify a TDCJ prison in Throckmorton County, and it should not be read as proof of any other person’s location.
Begin with the arresting sheriff and physical host jail. Ask for the transport date, commitment authority, and receiving agency. If TDCJ is named, allow for intake processing before relying on a public search. Preserve the county or jail transport record because it connects the local booking to the later state identifier. Search Current TDCJ Incarceration
The official TDCJ inmate search includes only people currently incarcerated in a TDCJ facility. It is useful after a confirmed transfer. It is not a released-offender archive. A missing result cannot be described as proof that the person was released, discharged, or never entered the state system.
- Use the TDCJ number or State Identification number when known.
- Otherwise enter the exact last name and at least the first initial.
- Narrow with gender and race only when needed to distinguish matches.
- Compare identifiers, location, offense data, and the displayed date fields.
- Record the exact status and access date, then use records channels for history.
The search uses an exact last-name match. Name variants and incomplete identifiers can hide the correct record. The current-search fields include last and first name, TDCJ number, SID number, gender, and race. At least a last name plus first initial, a TDCJ number, or a SID is required.

Its search controls support current identification. They do not create a historical TDCJ discharge result.
TDCJ Projected and Actual Dates
A Projected Release Date is a Classification and Records calculation of when release should occur if parole does not occur sooner, under the applicable mandatory-supervision and time-credit rules. It can change. An approval vote, program requirement, detainer, recalculation, or other lawful event may separate that projection from physical release. Even after the projected date passes, obtain the later event record before saying release occurred.
TDCJ defines a Discharge Date differently. Discharge marks completion of the sentence and release from incarceration, parole, mandatory supervision, or community supervision. A person may leave prison on parole or mandatory supervision and remain under conditions for years before final discharge. These dates answer different questions.

Read the label exactly as TDCJ uses it instead of converting a projection into an accomplished discharge.
Request TDCJ Information by Email
The free TDCJ email information route can supply the TDCJ number, location, conviction offense, prior incarceration history with offense, county, and court, present incarceration information, and Projected Release Date. Send the full name and seven-digit TDCJ number to pia@tdcj.texas.gov. If the number is unknown, provide the exact date of birth, or an approximate age plus the county of conviction. Put the person’s name in the subject line.
This informal route does not provide photographs or Social Security numbers. It is useful for identification and stated date information, but a full historical release question should be framed as a public-information request. Ask for the actual commitment and release history when the goal is to distinguish prison release, parole, mandatory supervision, and final discharge.

Call the Correct TDCJ Stage
Phone channels answer different points in the state release process. For current location and general offender information, call 936-295-6371 or 800-535-0283, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Without an identifying number, exact date of birth is required. A favorable BPP vote is not the same as release from prison. Conditions, program placement, processing, or another hold may remain. The post-vote line is the better channel after approval. The TDCJ telephone information page documents these stage-specific contacts.
Provide the TDCJ or SID number when possible and record which line supplied the answer.
Get Historical TDCJ Discharge Records
For durable history, use the TDCJ Office of General Counsel public-information process. Request existing fields with enough identifiers to locate the right file. Useful items include commitment and release history, actual release date and type, maximum-expiration or discharge date, parole or mandatory-supervision dates, TDCJ and SID numbers, and the related county, court, and offense identifiers.

No fixed discharge-record fee or release-specific retention period was verified. Ask for electronic copies and an itemized estimate. Costs depend on volume, medium, and lawful labor or material charges. TDCJ warns that inmate phone and visitation records are not releasable. If no responsive history is found, ask for the applicable retention schedule and oldest available record.

A precise event-field request is more effective than asking TDCJ to decide whether someone is simply “free.”
TDCJ Release Can Include Supervision
Parole is discretionary release that allows the balance of a prison sentence to be served under supervision. Mandatory supervision is a separate statutory release mechanism for eligible cases and may require BPP approval. Neither is final discharge. Probation, called community supervision in Texas records, is imposed by a court and locally administered rather than treated as a TDCJ prison release.
Throckmorton County is assigned to the Abilene District Parole Office in Region V for state parole and mandatory supervision. It is not a public list of everyone released from a county jail. Use it after an official TDCJ record identifies state supervision.

The terms remain important when reading a history. A Set Off is a later review date. Serve All means remaining until the applicable mandatory-supervision release or discharge point in the defined setting. A review date, approval vote, projected date, actual release, and discharge are five distinct events.
Confirm a TDCJ Release
The strongest proof is TDCJ commitment and release history or an official response naming the actual date and release type. Reconcile it with the county transport record when the case began in Throckmorton custody. If release was to parole or mandatory supervision, verify the supervision status through the Parole Division and the assigned district office. If the sentence ended, look for the discharge field rather than assuming prison departure was final.
- Establish the county-jail transfer to TDCJ.
- Use the current search only to check present state incarceration.
- Obtain the TDCJ identifier and stated date information.
- Request commitment and release history for past events.
- Check parole or mandatory supervision when the release type requires it.
- Record each agency’s exact wording and access date.
A missing current-search result is not enough. Nor is a projected date, a favorable vote, or a family report. The records should say what happened, when it occurred, and whether state supervision continued.
